What these online moms do is no doubt of great interest to the big guns in the advertising industry. So when we had a chance to get our hands on some stats from the Mom Articles Website, a site clearly devoted to serving up content for moms, we jumped at the chance.

The site doesn’t get a ton of traffic, but the articles are broken out into 42 topics all easily accessible so we don’t have reason to believe far greater number of visitors would affect the resulting percentages much.

What topics are moms most interested in?

Frankly, the first thing that jumped out at me was, I’m very happy to report, that the category ’sex’ was NOT one of the 10 most popular categories viewed! My faith in the human race is somewhat restored.

My conclusions are that moms are still the wonderful, loving, caring, special people they always were and that they are actually taking advantage of the great information that’s available at their fingertips.

If I were marketing to moms I’d convince them that losing weight and being cool are mutually exclusive and that my site, product, or service wouldn’t judge them for their size, but rather for their ability to forgive. ; )

Before trying to answer this one must first ask what the definition of “best” is. Is it the number of targeted visitors a directory delivers to a listed site? Or is it the “link juice” or SEO value delivered to the site? Are there other factors that might be considered as well, such as, exposure (listing viewed, but not clicked on)?

The “best” directories are the ones that will deliver a webmaster the best bang for their buck. Where “bang” equals a combination of: exposure to targeted prospects + targeted traffic. Most of us have a finite budget and need to carefully choose which directories to invest in to get maximum “bang” or return on investment (ROI).

In the last two years studies have shown an increase in online purchases of higher ticket items by moms indicating an increasing comfort level.

Second, shoppers are increasingly utilizing social navigation sites to read reviews on products and online stores before determining what to buy and where to purchase from. Sites like Buzzillions collects reviews from thousands of people who bought items and post their experiences online. The extra step Buzzillions takes to verify from the store owner that the purchase actually DID take place makes the resulting collection of reviews much more reliable.

For the online store owner these two trends help justify the heavy investments companies have been making to improve their search engine results page (SERPs) rankings through various search engine optimization (SEO)  tactics.

For the online shopper you’ve never had the ability to research a product like you do now. Use the tools and resources available to you before you make purchase decisions whether online or offline.

Those of you involved in manufacturing goods you’d better learn to rely on the realtime feedback from customers posted online in these review sites and blogs to determine how well you’re doing.
